Why solid poly lumber matters (and how to spot the cheap stuff)

I have hauled a lot of "maintenance-free" furniture to the curb over the years. The solid poly pieces are still sitting on porches all over the county. The hollow resin ones cracked, faded, and blew away.
What "poly lumber" actually means
Solid boards extruded from recycled HDPE — milk-jug plastic — with the pigment and UV protection blended into the material itself. About the density of hardwood, all the way through.
How to spot the difference in a store
- Lift one end. Solid poly is honestly heavy; hollow resin is suspiciously light.
- Look at a cut edge or the underside — solid color throughout, not a shell over foam.
- Check the hardware. Marine-grade stainless beats zinc-plated screws that streak rust in a year.
- Ask how it is built. Bolted, routed joinery beats snap-together clips.
Buy it nice or buy it twice. Solid poly is the nice way.
